Adjustable beds provide maximum relaxation to everybody. Resting and relaxing on an adjustable bed after a hectic day will get rid of your stress and fatigue.

Everybody has different sleeping preferences. Some people use pillows to lift their heads for improved breathing while others keep pillows below their knees to maintain the straightness of the spine. Poor sleeping habits result in various diseases.

Acid Reflux disease is one which creates heartburn and need an elevated upper body for the acid to go down and not create the burning sensation. If a person having Acid Reflux sleeps on a flat bed the acid in the stomach moves upward to the esophagus and throat and results in burning sensation and irritation. Acids are very sensitive and create problem in the esophagus.

People who suffer from Acid Reflux or heartburn must never sleep straight. The head must be 6 inches or above and sleeping in a sloping position helps to prevent the acids from the tummy from flowing into the esophagus. This will help lower the burning sensation and unhappiness.

Using lots of pillows and keeping it tilted will make your head uncomfortable, instead the preferred position can be obtained by using adjustable beds. You can adjust your adjustable beds in such a way that your head is raised while sleeping and thus preventing the acid to enter the esophagus.

Coconut products – Coconut is a known trigger of acid reflux. Best to avoid coconut products, though coconut water is considered to be good for acid reflux.

Spicy food – Foods rich in spices may be great for the palate but it is not so for the gut. Spicy foods tend to increase the chances of acid reflux, so eat moderately or make foods that are less spicy.

Fried food – If you like your food fried, then the chances of your having acid reflux disease is high. Fried foods tend to cause heartburn and if you can avoid the intake of fried food, the better for you.

In short, take care while eating and give at least 3 hours between food intake and sleep to sleep well without heartburn.

When the acid from the stomach goes back to the esophagus acid reflux or heart burn occurs. There are various theories which explain the cause of this problem. Firstly the theory blames this disease on the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) valves inability to prevent the acid from entering the esophagus. This hampers the working of this valve and the acid comes back in the esophagus which causes burning sensation.

The other theory explains that this disease is due to intake of junk food in your diet. Eating large meals, spicy food, processed and packaged foods, puts too much pressure on the tummy. As your stomach cannot digest such a huge quantity of food, majority of the food remains undigested. This undigested portion starts rotting in the tummy and becomes acidic waste. This creates stomach spasms or twitching that raises the level of stomach gas. This gas breaks open the LES valve and the acid rushes into the esophagus.

Aging also causes acid reflux, as we grow older, our tummy’s activity decreases, leading to a drop in the production of hydrochloric acid. This causes the infections to thrive, leading to tummy pain and excess acid production, and leads to acid reflux disease.

It is a chronic disease and the medicines are available in the market to reduce the production of stomach acid which always provides a temporary relief but does not cure from the root. These medicines can have damaging side-effects as they reduce the efficient digestion of food in the stomach in a normal way and increase the risk of infections by pathogens transmitted through food, and make you more susceptible to food poisoning etc.

Always go for natural treatment and change your diet and lifestyle as it is the best course of action. Avoid foods that can aggravate the problem.

Here are some modifications which can minimize the occurrence of acid reflux:

- Reduce excess weight if you are overweight.

- Do not take alcohol.

- Eat enough but don’t over eat

- Do not sleep immediately after eating. Lift the head of your bed by 6-8 inches.

These tips will prevent the occurrence of acid reflux.
